Top Reasons Why Your RO Water Tastes Bitter
If your purified water suddenly has a bitter, metallic, or chemical taste, your machine is telling you something is wrong. Don't dismiss it — here are the most common causes and what to do.
1. Exhausted Carbon Filters
The activated carbon filter removes chlorine and taste compounds. When it's saturated (usually after 4–6 months), it stops working. Worse, it can begin releasing previously adsorbed contaminants back into the water, causing a chemical or musty taste.
2. New Machine or After-Service Chlorine Flush
If your purifier is new or was just serviced, technicians typically sanitise the system with a dilute chlorine solution. If not properly flushed out, it can leave a bleach-like taste for the first few days. Run 2–3 full tanks through before normal use.
3. Very Low TDS Water
Counter-intuitively, water that is too pure can taste flat or slightly bitter. If your RO is over-purifying (TDS below 30 ppm), it strips out natural minerals that make water taste pleasant. A TDS controller or mineralizer cartridge fixes this.
4. Contaminated Storage Tank
The internal food-grade storage tank can develop biofilm or mould if the machine has been unused for a period. A professional sanitisation every 6 months is recommended.
5. New Pipes or Building Construction Nearby
If construction or pipe replacement happened in your area recently, there can be a temporary surge in dissolved metals in the supply water, overwhelming your filters faster than usual.
